Kybella treatment - Orange County with Dr. John Laura

Kybella, the miracle-like double chin-melting treatment to help you achieve your best face. Kybella helps patients realize profile altering results sometimes as dramatic as liposuction on the chin but without the surgery. Kybella is a injection lipolysis treatment which means that it kills fat cells which then become absorbed and eliminated by the body. Thus, results become visible over the course of several weeks after each treatment.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved injectable to treat a double chin. Kybella is made from synthetic deoxycholic, which is a naturally occurring molecule in your body. It is a bile acid that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fats. They mimic the body’s natural fat absorption process. Deoxycholic acid destroys the fat cells when it is injected beneath your chin, resulting in reduced fullness under the chin. Once destroyed, the cells cannot store or accumulate fat, and hence, further treatment is not required.

Kybella is a highly effective solution for reduction of chin fat. While Kybella is only FDA-approved for use on chin fat, the reaction of body fat to Kybella is the same regardless of location on the body. Some patients have successfully reduced fat using Kybella in areas such as tops and sides of knees, armpit fat, and upper arms.

What to Expect on the Kybella Treatment

Treating submental fat or a double chin has increased over the years. There are several medical practitioners who offer these services. We advise you to consult an experienced practitioner such as Dr. John Laura. During your consultation, Dr. John Laura will review your medical history, present medical condition, medications, your family’s medical history, and allergies to check if you are a suitable candidate. A treatment plan is created based on the depth of the submental fat in your chin, and the number of injections is decided. He may also change some medications if required.

On the day of the treatment, the targeted area is cleaned with antiseptic, and the injection site is marked. Dr. John Laura will either use ice packs or local anesthesia to numb the area to reduce any discomfort. Kybella is then injected in the marked area of your chin with a very fine needle for minimal discomfort. The treatment process usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. Dr. John Laura will recommend the number of treatments needed, depending on the fat accumulated.

Most patients can return to normal activities the same day or the next. The results will appear gradually and naturally over the coming weeks with full results within a couple of months.

Results from Kybella can be considered semi-permanent. By maintaining a healthy diet, results can potentially last for years.

How Does Kybella Compare to CoolSculpting?

Both Kybella and CoolSculpting act to kill fat cells so that the body can eliminate them. However, CoolSculpting does so with an applicator that targets fat cells with freezing temperatures without damaging other tissues. Intrinsically, this can mean that CoolSculpting treats a broader, less targeted area and potentially kills fewer fat cells over the same area per treatment. So Kybella is really best at targeting specific small areas. At Dr. John Laura’s clinic, we will be able to advise you on which treatment(s) would be most effective for your concerns.

What Other Treatments Can I Get With Kybella?

That will depend on your situation and evaluation by Dr. John Laura. Some patients may be candidates for chin / jawline augmentation with hyaluronic acid fillers or bio-fillers. It’s possible to achieve the look of a slimmer jaw with fillers which can create additional structure and compliment the double chin reduction caused by Kybella. Ask Dr. John Laura about exploring this option.

Some patients may suffer from loose skin around the neck. For those, a thread lift may also be a good option.

Are You a Suitable Candidate for Kybella?

Kybella has very minimal side effects such as redness, bruising, muscle weakness, and numbness in the injection site. These side effects are very common and reduce within a day or two. Most of the time, side effects are a result of improper treatment under inexperienced hands or because partial information is given to the doctor. Dr. John Laura recommends that each patient provides all information on any existing medical conditions to ensure that there are no severe side effects, as Kybella is not for everyone.

Kybella is not recommended to you if:

  • You are under 18 years of age
  • You are taking blood thinners
  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding or want to be pregnant
  • You have a medical condition in or near your neck area or you have trouble swallowing
  • You have a wound or infection in the targeted area
  • You have received a facial surgery recently
